MLM - Sharing Vs Selling

A lot of MLM “gurus’ will tell you that, “It’s not about selling, it’s about sharing.”  I think they’re missing the point. They’re trying to say that sharing your knowledge will benefit you in the long run by attracting the kind of trust and loyalty that a successful network needs. I get that. I’ve even been known to say that myself.  But to say that “it’s not about selling” is stretching that point way too far. You’re in a business and at the end of the day, sales DO matter. Let’s get this point clear - It’s about both.

You are sharing your business opportunity, but you are also selling the idea of yourself as a leader. If you fail to make that rather fine distinction, you’re setting yourself up for a situation where you have a network of eager marketers with no actual income coming in to keep everybody happy. What are the chances you’re going to be able to keep that network together for long?

To have a successful business in MLM, you need to share your hard earned marketing skills down the line so your network can replicate your success. Do that and you’re creating teams of highly effective marketers who can drive your residual income streams to amazing heights. You need to share what you know about MLM to fine tune a well oiled machine that produces consistently spectacular results.

That’s the easy part. Call it sharing, training, mentoring or educating. It all boils down to showing people what you’ve got and laying your cards on the table. But the tricky part, where a lot of people don’t follow through on is selling.

No matter what product or service you’re marketing, what actually closes a sale is YOU-the only variable that is unique and inspires long term trust in a business relationship. You need to step up and be a leader in order to attract business and get people to have trust in what you say. Master that part and the rest takes care of itself.

So, how do you “sell” yourself? Be visible. Put yourself out there on blogs, social networking sites, YouTube and voice your opinions. Leaders lead. They don’t sit around waiting for things to just happen. They have a clear vision of what they want and how to get it done and they’re not shy about letting people know about it. I’m not suggesting that you be pushy or obnoxious, but rather be confident. There’s a difference. Never start off a conversation with a sales pitch. People aren’t looking to build a long term relationship with a salesman, but they will stick around for a great leader. Show people you know where you’re going and make sure they’ll want to be there along side you.
